One of the twentieth century’s most radical and beloved educators, A. S. Neill, tells his own story in Neill! Neill! Orange Peel! a candid, warmhearted, and frequently irreverent memoir that chronicles the life of the man who dared to reimagine childhood itself. From his humble origins in rural Scotland to the founding of Summerhill, the world-famous free school in Suffolk, England, Neill presents his journey with the same disarming honesty and playful wit that defined his entire philosophy: that children, given freedom and trust, will flourish beyond all expectation. This autobiography is far more than a personal history it is a manifesto disguised as a memoir, arguing passionately against the coercive structures of conventional education and the repressive forces Neill believed stifled the natural joy and creativity of the young. Written with the colloquial directness and intellectual courage that made him a countercultural icon, the narrative illuminates the ideas that shaped Summerhill and influenced generations of progressive educators worldwide. Readers who assume they know what schooling must look like will find their certainties quietly, irrevocably dismantled.
